Salary Range: $19.34 - 28.16
Starting salary is determined based upon factors that may include: years of relevant experience, education, applicable certifications/licensure, and internal equity.
Basic Job Function and Responsibilities
To assist the Registered Nurse with patient care and specific procedures relative to the Obstetrics Department, Operating Room or Endoscopy Suite. Promote the Mission, Vision and Values of Mercy Hospital Iowa City.
Job Duties/Performance Expectations
- Assists with procedures related to admitting and transferring patients; assists with transporting, lifting, and positioning patients; patient preparations, taking vital signs, scrub duties for vaginal and c-section deliveries/surgeries.
- Attends and participates in department meetings and in-service programs.
- Instructs patient and family relative to routine care techniques.
- Maintains and cleans designated areas following procedures.
- Makes suggestion for changes and improvements in the department.
- Participates in sponge and sharps count for surgical procedures as required by area assignment.
- Recognizes signs of complications while performing techniques and seeks guidance in rectifying complications; keeps the RN informed of conditions and problems encountered during patient care/surgical procedures.
- Selects and prepares routine supplies and equipment for procedures using aseptic technique; stores and rotates supplies. May include sterilization of instruments and supplies.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
Education
- Graduation from Surgical Technologist program or an equivalent combination of education & experience - Required
Experience
- Minimum one year previous operating room experience - Preferred
- Effective critical thinking skills - Required
- Ability to multi-task, prioritize and anticipate the surgical team’s needs - Required
- Team oriented with good interpersonal skills - Required
Certification, Licensure or Registration
- Certification as a Surgical Technologist - Preferred
- Current Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) within 6 months of date of hire - Required
