Brief Summary of Job Duties

The General Research Information Technology group (GRIT) runs a large, complex, multidisciplinary research department serving several Organized Research Units. In support of GRIT, the job Involves a hybrid of multiple computational / data / Cyberinfrastructure (CI) dominated fields such as, but not limited to: bioinformatics, geographical information science (GIS), data analytics, and earth sciences research. The primary responsibility is to facilitate research, with the use of computational and data science technology as the main tool to accomplish the research. Responsibilities include research, design, development, analysis, operation, and support of high performance computing (HPC) and data science research, software, tools and hardware resources.

The incumbent develops data algorithms and performs computations, statistical analyses, interpretation and reporting of research. The job requires the application of skills as a seasoned, experienced IT research professional in diverse research application areas. Uses computational, computer science, data science, and CI software research and development principles, with relevant domain science knowledge where applicable, along with professional programming concepts for medium- sized projects or portions of larger projects. The incumbent: develops and optimizes a variety of computational, data science, and CI research tools and components; performs research on current and future HPC, data, and CI technologies, hardware and software projects; works on algorithm development, optimization, programming, performance analysis and/or benchmarking assignments of moderate scope. In particular these tasks involve knowledge of either domain / computer science research requirements and / or CI design / implementation requirements.

In order to achieve the missions of the Department of Geography, the Earth Research Institute (ERI), the Marine Science Institute (MSI) and the Institute of Social and Behavioral Research (ISBER) all highly computational units in nature with 300-500 machines (Unix, Macs, Windows), and over 7 Pb of disk storage, serving over eighty research groups (as of 2022), this position requires that the incumbent utilize innovative and robust solutions on computational issues in order to effectively facilitate research, foster collaboration among research groups, and assist in the technical training of researchers and students. Under the direction of the Director of Computing for the General Research Information and Technology group (GRIT), and along with another Systems Administrator 3 as appropriate, is responsible for the computer and network facilities and resources in Geography and ERI. Defines, designs, and implements software and hardware, system upgrades, computer and network security, maintenance and repairs, network expansion. Manages system accounting, and application software configuration. Responsible for network services critical to operations including: web services, remote access, license servers, virtual infrastructure, data storage and file sharing services. Responsible for defining, designing and implementing databases and websites relating to the groups supported by GRIT, and a multitude of associated groups and centers. Defines, designs and implements highly complex software and scripts to support systems management, log analysis and other system administration duties for multiple, highly integrated systems. Performs complex analysis to acquire, install, modify and support operating systems, databases, utilities and web-related tools. Selects methods and techniques to obtain solutions. Collaborates with research personnel to help define and design solutions to research problems through utilization of GRIT. computing and network resources or designing solutions for their specific research team. Contingent upon availability, and on a recharge basis, assists with instrumentation, scientific workflow and resource management to assist researchers in deployment planning and analysis of data collected during equipment deployments. Responsible for writing and executing complex scripts; specifying, installing, and maintaining several software systems used for processing collected or generated data and assisting researchers in using same.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in related area and/or related experience.

Seasoned systems administration experience.

Strong experience with infrastructure and service design deployment.

Experience with complex software and scripts.

Demonstrated experience writing and editing complex scripts used to perform system maintenance and administration.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working in research computing.

Experience with open source virtualization, containers, and vast data storage.

Systems Architect


Along with another Systems Administrator 3 as appropriate, is responsible for the following: Defines, designs, implements, manages and maintains several departmental and research databases utilizing various DBMSs (MySql, Sqlite, Postgres). With a high level of independence, takes lead on management of web technology (static, wiki, and drupal) services with currently over 150 live sites (as of 2022), license servers, wired and wireless networks at local and remote locations including lab spaces at Ellison, Girvetz, Phelps, Marine Science Institute and Webb Halls and the Cheadle Center for Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration (CCBER) housed at Harder Stadium, NRS, the Dangermond Preserve and off-site back-ups. Defines, designs and implements complex scripts to provide support and programming (e.g. C, C-shell, Bourne shell (and variants), perl, python javascript, HTML, CSS, and PHP, as well as extensive knowledge of Unix and Windows operating systems and utilities) for the compute environment and its researchers including the recharge system and accounting, resource management, process automation, DNS for the eri, geog, msi, isber, bren, ccber, nrs, chc, spot, spatial, sustainability, snow, oceancolor, biogeog and other domains. Defines, designs and implements, manages and maintains web services for research project related websites (on a recharge basis) some requiring constant service of data per agency requirements.

Infrastructure Deployment


Works jointly with the IT Director, and another Systems Administrator 3 as appropriate, in providing customer support, research, development and maintenance of chosen operating systems and file systems, virtual environment servers and systems, server room optimization, organization and management including multiple spaces at Ellison, North Hall Data Center, MSI, Girvetz, and CNSI with UPSes, KVMs, RAID arrays and managed switches, and setup and maintenance of seminar rooms and common meeting spaces and instructional labs. With the IT Director and another Systems Administrator 3 as appropriate, performs complex security control in managing security of the computers, network systems and data provided by the GRIT team, requiring interpretation of campus and UCOP policies, providing recommendations on network access controls, expertise in various security utilities, such as host based firewalls and virus scanners, used to protect data and workstations. Backs-up core systems and provides access to backup facilities for researchers and staff.
