Purpose:
This position is responsible for the management of the GC Unit within the MDHHS Bureau of HIV and STI Programs (BHSP), STI/HIV Field Services Section. This unit supports statewide efforts to reduce the prevalence of gonorrhea, with a special emphasis on areas of high morbidity and vulnerable populations. The Unit Manager oversees the operationalization of innovative methods of case investigation with a focus on technology and is responsible for ensuring training and professional development for the team of GC Disease Intervention Specialists. As part of the Field Services Leadership Team, the incumbent will participate in decisions related to program policy and direction. This includes communication and coordination with local health departments and other safety net STI providers as it relates to timely reporting and accurate treatment of cases, along with notification and follow-up of identified partners. This position will coordinate the daily activities of GC Disease Intervention Specialists (DIS).
Duties
and
Responsibilities:
- Provide leadership, supervision, direction, and coordination of staff in the GC Unit including assignment of projects, reviewing casework, and evaluating outcomes, encouraging employee development, training, and managing workforce.
- Ensure a high standard of security and confidentiality.
- Ensure data integrity and quality as part of the Michigan Disease Surveillance System.
- Perform administrative functions like timesheets, accessing technology, and on-boarding and supporting staff.
- Serve as the primary contact for GC investigations and interventions within BHSP and as a subject matter expert for local health departments to provide ongoing quality management.
- Work in collaboration with the STI Interventions Unit Manager to coordinate efforts related to ensuring appropriate testing and treatment of GC for assigned cases and identified partners.
- Work in collaboration with STI Field Unit Managers on co-infections investigations (GC-syphilis or GC-HIV).
- Ensure GC DIS are trained across disciplines (HIV, Syphilis, HCV, TB) to acquire diverse knowledge of public health practice that will prepare them to respond to emerging infections and outbreaks.
- Implement an emergency/outbreak response as part of the statewide network of DIS that stand ready to be deployed for public health emergencies.
- Always represent the best interests of MDHHS and MPHI.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications/Requirements:
Education: Possession of a bachelor's degree in any major required; a bachelor’s in public health, statistics, health care, nursing, etc., preferred.
Experience: Four years professional experience; experience in communicable disease preferred.

Requirements:
This position is hybrid. Eligible to work remotely at home with occasional in person time required in a BGHSP office (Lansing or Detroit). Requires viewing a CRT or VDT screen over 75% of the time. Valid operator’s license to attend office-site meetings, conferences and trainings required.
