The shelter receives approximately 15,000 homeless pets annually and strives to find as many as possible appropriate placement. Animal Services staff comprises four distinct teams – an enforcement operations team responsible for upholding local law in regards to animal welfare, a kennel team that handles the intakes and day-to-day care for the hundreds of shelter guests, a clinic team that handles the medical care and spay/neuter surgeries for the shelter animals and a communications team, which facilitate reclaims, adoptions, rescue placements and foster arrangements.

Representative Duties
Orange County Animal Services is seeking a staff veterinarian who will ensure shelter pets receive prompt and proper medical care and continued monitoring for individual health and welfare. The veterinarian will assist in the management of medical and surgical care. The veterinarian will be expected to perform surgeries including, but not limited to, spay and neuter of cats and dogs, as sterilization is a top priority for Animal Services. The veterinarian works directly with the clinic program manager, clinic supervisors and veterinary technicians. Representative duties include:
Utilizes strong team building skills in working with the shelter staff, particularly when making decisions regarding the housing, placement, care and outcome of animals within the shelter.
Ensures all animals in care receive prompt and proper medical care and continued monitoring for individual health and welfare.
Perform spay and neuter surgeries on a daily basis, in addition to other surgical procedures as necessary.
Maintain accurate and thorough records for each individual animal as well as for the use and distribution of controlled substance consistent with Federal and State requirements.
Provide medical expertise and assistance to the Animal Services Division staff, onsite, in the field and in court as needed.
Assist with the development of policies, procedures and protocols related to the veterinary needs of animals in the shelter’s care.
Participate in training of other staff and volunteers as needed.
Lifts/carries minimum of 50 pounds, stands for long periods of time, walks through kennel section and examines, restrains and treats animals, some of which may be fractious.
Position may be called upon during times of county’s emergency activation, may be required to report to work during a period of general emergency.
Work will typically involve one weekend day and may require evenings as well.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Requires a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine degree from an accredited college or university.
Must possess a Florida Veterinary License to Practice.
Must possess Federal and State licenses to prescribe drugs, from the Drug Enforcement Agency.
Preferences
Experience practicing veterinary medicine in an animal shelter environment.
Experience performing spay and neuter surgeries.
Current USDA Veterinary Accreditation and ability to maintain such status.
Experience handling/knowledge of small animals, specifically rabbits and ferrets.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $97,000.00 - $143,000.00 per year
