Veterinary Technician Job at Animal Health Clinic
The Veterinary Technician is responsible for preparing, assisting and monitoring patients for exam, treatments and surgeries. This is an overview of the position and is not limited to the duties listed.
Minimum Qualifications:
Knowledge of: Proper methods of animal restraint
Cleaning and disinfecting methods and use and care of cleaning materials and equipment
Ability to: Use cleaning materials and equipment with skill and efficiency,
Perform moderately heavy physical labor
Empathetically and compassionately treat sick and injured animals,
Learn to administer medications and recognize abnormal conditions,
Understand and carry out oral and written directions,
Maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work
Maintain a neat and professional image
Education: Equivalent to completion of 12th grade
Experience: Previous experience in veterinary hospital or related medical field preferred
Major Goals:
- To be efficient, very pleasant, courteous, polite, concerned and helpful to all clients under all conditions at all times.
- To keep the office organized, ensuring smooth and efficient client flow.
- To recommend all necessary laboratory work, such as pre-anesthetic profiles, heartworm tests, feline leukemia tests, geriatric physicals, that are necessary for optimum patient care.
- To recommend all vaccinations that are necessary for optimum patient care.
- To recommend products such as flea control, vitamins, diets and dental prophy’s that are necessary for optimum patient care.
- To counsel clients regarding behavioral problems, obesity, geriatric care, nutritional problems, flea control, etc.
Major Duties:
- Assist in exam rooms by getting weight, temperature and brief history. Restrain animals during exam. Perform routine suture removals, nail trims and weight checks.
- Basic client education, including puppy/kitten care, heartworms and nutrition.
- Assist with morning treatment and care of animals in kennel. Make sure all animals get proper medications. Treat routine surgical patients from the previous day.
- Maintain any treatments requested by doctor. Mark all services rendered on appropriate forms.
- Have supplies prepared for exams and appointments
- Run fecal, heartworm test, urinalysis and FeLV test as needed. Keep area clean.
- Monitor lab supplies and prepare all forms and label tubes for any scheduled blood work. Package blood samples for shipment to outside lab.
- Monitor pets in clinic to be sure they are comfortable and clean. Clean cages as needed. Oversee kennel duties.
- Maintain stock of prescription and non-prescription pet foods
- Perform and assist in dental procedures
- Take, develop and maintain radiograph files as needed.
- Maintain animal records by recording all conversations with clients and any treatments performed. Work closely with doctors and follow-up on additional work needed.
- Prepare any prescriptions that need to be dispensed.

- Maintain adequate supplies
- Unpack boxes and check off packing lists
- Stock and store
- Properly record items used in house * Help keep hospital clean and orderly.
- Perform any other duties requested by the doctor, practice manager or lead technician.
Specific Duties:
- Follow the Animal Health Clinic general policies
- Greet client with a smile. Address both the client and patient by name.
- Escort client and patient to exam room. Weight the pet, assist in getting animal on exam room table and obtain temperature.
- Get additional information on animal’s reason for presentation to the clinic
- Set up and read fecal and/or urinalysis
- Call DVM to exam room
- Aid in restraining animal for examination and treatment by doctor
- Get results of lab work ready for doctor
- Anticipate vaccines or other medications doctor will need to treat animal and have ready.
- Be familiar with available pet health literature. Prepare relevant literature packet for pet’s health and to aid in answering owner’s questions. All clients should leave with some sort of literature.
- Show client how to give medications to pet, clean ears, and brush teeth.
- Answer any additional questions and escort client to reception area for payment processing.
- Clean exam room – remove used syringes, clean table and spot clean floor if necessary
- Keep lab and pharmacy area neat and clean.
- Dispense medications as prescribed by DVM
- Surgery
- Review surgery schedule and arrange procedures appropriately (those going home same day should be preformed first)
- Get together all necessary instruments and equipment necessary
- Prepare anesthetic according to pet’s weight and needs.
- Prepare animal for surgery
- Assist doctor in surgery suite
- Clean up animals following surgery, give injections and trim nails. Check file to see if anything else is needed while pet is in the hospital
- Monitor pet through recovery
- Prepare for next surgery
- Maintain inventory on all suture or surgery supplies and place on order board if needed * Walk dogs and clean kennels as needed.
- Maintain supplies in exam rooms
- Prepare and send reminder post cards
- Place follow-up phone calls to check on the status of certain pets
- Assist with euthanasias
- Maintain anesthesia log
- Maintain laboratory log
- Complete discharge forms
- Complete surgery forms
- General maintenance and cleaning of grounds and building
- Kennel assistant duties as needed
- Maintain any logs or policies as required by management and AAHA
