The Office of University Communications is seeking a Web Developer to join their Web Technologies team as they build and launch a new tech stack to include digital experience platform features and content syndication across campus web properties. University Communications is responsible for managing Stanford’s highest-impact communications channels, including stanford.edu and news.stanford.edu.


As a Web Developer, you will contribute to our exciting new development efforts while working with the team to maintain and support our current systems. Qualified candidates will be eager to learn and expand their knowledge in the operation and development of high-impact web properties. This position requires knowledge of JavaScript and exposure to WordPress; strong, semantic, a11y-compliant HTML; advanced CSS; and familiarity with command line tools and interfaces. The ability to work with GitHub repos, local development tools, and within an active development team is essential.


Agile certification, knowledge of PHP, Python, or SQL, and knowledge of shell scripts are all strong pluses. Project management skills are a big plus, as is familiarity with the higher education sector.


This new role reports to the Director of Web Technologies within University Communications’ digital strategy team. University Communications, part of the Office of External Relations, provides support and campus leadership in the planning, coordinating, and implementing of strategic communications programs that support Stanford University and its mission. University Communications is responsible for brand positioning and strategy; issues and reputation management; crisis communications; oversight of digital content and top-level web and social media platforms; media relations and news services; executive communications with all constituencies; major publications; and a campus video productions studio and video production group. University Communications coordinates with communications professionals across the university, provides leadership to the Communications Working Group, and advises on communications policy with senior executive staff.


CORE DUTIES:

  • Work in collaboration with the development team to develop websites and software applications using clean, semantic, scalable code.
  • Monitor and respond to CMS, DXP, and DAM support requests from University Communications colleagues and other areas of the university.
  • Develop or validate quality assurance and testing schedules, addressing all browsers and devices to ensure various computers can access content.
  • Contribute, maintain and review documentation on design assumptions, application requirements and specifications, business logic, training materials, help text, and release notes.
  • Create and maintain systems in compliance with Stanford’s online accessibility policies. Monitor and respond to accessibility compliance issues.
  • Collaborate on user research projects, creating personas, and identifying required tasks and information flows for given systems.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to promoting and supporting an environment of diversity and inclusion.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:


Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree and three years of experience or a combination of education and relevant experience.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of computer systems, business processes, and technical workflows.
  • Demonstrated experience in planning and developing web applications.
  • Familiarity with current web technologies, such as modern JavaScript (ESNext, React), Babel, SASS, webpack, HTML5, and REST.
  • Experience designing, building, and maintaining highly reusable JavaScript, HTML, and CSS code in responsive designs.
  • Experience coding for accessibility, ensuring adequate access to information through assistive technologies.
  • Familiarity with user research, user testing, usability testing, and analysis.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including bridging functional and technical resources by communicating effectively with individuals of varying systems expertise.
  • Proven problem-solving and analytical thinking and the ability to approach problems logically and systematically.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in multidisciplinary teams and on projects with a diverse array of stakeholders.
