Paid Internship Opportunity
Southland Steel Fabricators Inc. is a family owned and operated company which opened its doors in 1986. Through the 30+ years of business, (SSF) has grown into one of the largest steel fabricators in the region. With an ever-growing steel fabrication industry ahead, Southland Steel has decided to open its doors to 6 internship opportunities. Built from industry leading technics and standards, these Welders in Training and Fitters in Training will be given the real-world knowledge needed to master the steel fabrication trade.
These positions must be filled with motivated individuals, of any skill level, looking to pursue a career in welding or fitting in the fabrication industry.
During the internships you must be willing to learn hands on production training (4-8 weeks), as well as classroom instructed training (2-4 weeks).
At the end of the program, you must pass a weld or fit test to graduate out of the internship.
Location: US-LA-Amite, LA and Greensburg, LA
Overview
Southland Steel Fabricators is seeking a welding and/or fitter student intern to support our metal fabrication operations at either our Amite, LA or Greensburg, LA locations. The internship will last for 8-12 weeks. The ideal candidate is hard working, quick to pick up new skills and apply new information, and enthusiastic about welding.
In this role you'll have the opportunity to work cross-functionally with multiple departments applying what you have learned in training to various projects.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs all work according to OSHA and Southland Steel Safety policies
- Receives direction orally or written from shop foreman on plans of fabrication or repair for the day's tasks.
- Evaluates the job to verify that supplies are on hand to complete the task.
- Communicates with supervisors in the event of an unscheduled repair requirement that would lead to the loss of production that would otherwise be completed as scheduled
- Measures, cuts, fits, and welds various types of metals by varying types of process.
- Other duties may be assigned
Desired Education, Knowledge, And / Or Skills:
- Experience in heavy structural fabrication
- Ability to read and understand blueprints, shop drawings and welding symbols
- Proficient in effective operation of welding equipment
- 1-2 years welding experience with some flux core welding (FCAW)
- Must pass welding test as part of the application process
- Knowledge of basic shop mathematics
Preferred Skills, Education, and Experience
- Actively enrolled in a welding or related program, two- or four-year college, university, or technical school
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Efficiency, accuracy, and responsibility
- One year or 30+ credits towards the degree or certificate
- Previous internship or work experience in the construction or construction materials business
Safety Requirements
- Adhere to all Southland Steel Fabricators, Inc. Safety Rules, Policies, and Procedures
- Maintain orderly and clean work area
- Attend all required safety meetings
- Inspect the welding equipment each day to ensure it meets safety standards with special attention to welding leads
- Must inspect tools daily before each use, to include extension cords
- Use hand and power tools safely at all times with correct guards in place
- Wear personal protective equipment in accordance with policy and adequate for specific tasks
- Welding - Wear specific Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including but not limited to:
- Welders helmet with appropriately shaded filter lens, with safety glasses under helmet
- Fire/flame resistant clothing
- Heavy flame-resistant gloves
- Respirators when welding harmful metals or when ventilation is not adequate
- Steel/hard toe boots
- Hearing protection
- Cutting steel with torch:
- Wear either properly shaded safety glasses with a face shield or cutting goggles, hearing protection, steel/hard toe boots, gloves, and fire/flame resistant clothing
- Use proper friction lighters or other approved devices to light the torch
Physical and Environmental Requirements:
In order to do the job, the following physical requirements are necessary:
- Ability to stand for long periods of time
- Ability to occasionally pull, push, carry, or lift tools, equipment or materials 50 lbs. or less
- Ability to withstand occasional bending, squatting, or crouching
- Ability to frequently handle (hold, seize, grasp, turn, etc.) tools, equipment, or material
- Ability to work in inclement weather conditions, to include cold, heat, and humidity
