JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Custom Applicator REPORTS TO: Operations Manager

DATE: March 2020 LOCATION: Watkins

Summary of the Job:

It is the primary responsibility of the Custom Applicator to accurately apply plant nutrients and crop protection products to customer’s fields according to specifications set by our Agronomists and customers. The Custom Applicator will complete this in a manner that will optimize the cooperative’s market share and savings, improve the cooperative’s efficiencies, help achieve the cooperative’s mission and goals and result in outstanding customer service. The Applicator must maintain a positive attitude that promotes a favorable image of the cooperative.

Essential Functions of the Job:

Custom Application

  • Applies fertilizer and chemicals accurately, in accordance with manufacturer’s requirements and the customer’s crop plan.
  • Responsible for proper calibration of fertilizer and spraying equipment.
  • Communicates with patrons and employees in a manner that will create support and loyalty for Centra Sota Cooperative.
  • Assists operations/sales staff with providing outstanding customer service to our patrons.
  • Maintenance and Safety
  • Responsible for the maintenance of spreading and spraying equipment.
  • Assist location management with regular facility and equipment maintenance as needed.
  • Assist with facility housekeeping to maintain a clean and orderly facility.
  • Attends safety related job training provided by the cooperative.
  • Abides by all safety policies and PPE requirements.
  • Other Duties
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management
  • Serves as backup for operations staff as needed
  • Abides and upholds all company policies

Note: These are the major functions required of the position and are the predominant criteria by which performance will be assessed. THIS ROLE WILL ALSO INCLUDE OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED.

Working Relationships, Autonomy, and Supervision:

The Custom Applicator must interact regularly and appropriately collaborate with all levels of personnel at all Centra Sota facilities. Specifically, this role must have effective, daily contact with location operations and sales staff. In addition, this role will have frequent customer contact and must be able to effectively manage these relationships.

Required Qualifications, Experience & Knowledge (Minimum level of formal education required for competent performance of the technical duties; previous experience requirements; personal competencies & characteristics deemed necessary for success in the position:

  • Education and experience:
  • High school diploma required;
  • Vocational/Technical training in equipment operation and maintenance;
  • 2 yr agriculture degree from an accredited agronomy program preferred;
  • Prior application experience preferred.

  • Strong team work and listening skills;
  • Good interpersonal skills, being approachable and tactful, with an ability to interact effectively and professionally with employees and customers;
  • Customer service oriented and understands when to provide feedback to management so they may appropriately resolve conflict, problem solve and manage difficult situations with customers;
  • Resourceful, self-starter who works well with minimal supervision;
  • Results-oriented, accurate and thorough with a commitment to accountability;
  • Excellent, effective oral communication skills;
  • Mechanical aptitude necessary;
  • General understanding of basic mathematics, such as adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing and an ability to perform these operations using units of weigh measurement, volume and distance.
  • Must maintain current custom applicator’s license;
  • Must maintain a valid CDL driver’s license with tanker an hazardous material endorsements, DOT required medical certification and comply with all documentation requirement mandated by the DOT.

  • Frequent standing, walking and sitting.
  • Vision abilities required include close, distance and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Regular climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and reaching above, below and at shoulder level.
  • Frequent pushing, pulling, lifting and carrying of items weighing up to 50lbs, have full use of both arms and legs and good finger and manual dexterity.
  • Frequent work entailing continuous exposure to dirt, dust, dampness, airborne particles, extreme weather conditions and temperatures, heavy/moving equipment and moderate noise levels, and other attributes common to such sites.
