The Pathogen and Microbiome Institute at Northern Arizona University and the Caporaso Bioinformatics Lab seek a Application Programmer Apprentice to be part of a bioinformatics research and open source bioinformatics software development team. This position will involve microbiome bioinformatics data analysis, and software development, testing, documentation and support, centered around the QIIME 2 (https://qiime2.org) open source software package.
Bioinformatics Analyst - 45%
- Learn and perform bioinformatics data analysis and interpretation. This will primarily involve applications of the QIIME 2 platform to analyze microbiome project data.
- Receives training and guidance to learn how to gather and interpret basic information related to additions or modifications to university supported applications in order to be used for recommendations.
- Assists in writing basic reports and communications to provide information.
- Learns to develop programming logic for new applications or analyzes and modifies logic in existing applications.
- Receives training and guidance to learn how to analyze requirements, test, and integrate routine application components.
Research Software Engineering - 30%
- Learn to design, develop, and test new features for the QIIME 2 platform.
- Assist with QIIME 2 release activities.
- Assists in ensuring that system improvements are successfully implemented and realized.
QIIME 2 Support Assistant - 20%
- Assist with technical support to QIIME 2 users on the QIIME 2 Forum.
- Train to co-teach QIIME 2 workshops.
Other - 5%
- Assist with general administrative duties in the Caporaso Lab.
- Other duties as assigned.
- High school degree.
- Bachelor’s degree.
- 2-4 years programming experience.
- Experience developing and testing Python software.
- Experience performing data analysis with QIIME 2.
- Experience using GitHub (or a similar platform).
- Experience working with command line software in Linux and macOS environments.
Knowledge
- Will be taught baseline working knowledge of administration tools, processes, policies and concepts including design, configuration driven customization, programming, scripting, and database languages.
- Will be taught application configuration and development best practices.
Skills
- Bioinformatics data analysis skills, including:
- Using command line software, compute clusters, and narrative computing environments such as Jupyter Notebook or R Studio.
- Software development and testing skills.

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. Anticipated salary range is $47,634 to $59,542. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.
This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.
This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System; paid vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. More information on benefits at NAU is available on the Human Resources benefits website. Classified Staff employees are in a probationary status for their first six months at NAU. NAU is a tobacco and smoke-free campus. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. Additionally, new employees will begin participating in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date.
