Mesa's Merrillville, Indiana location seeks a Communications Design Specialist to join the expanding Power Delivery Substation team. The Communication Design Specialist serves as the local Communications Design Subject Matter Expert and communication designer for new microwave, wireless systems, fiber optic, MUX, SCADA, and associated infrastructure for regional electrical utility facilities, with a focus on electrical substations between 12kV - 345kV.
This position will initially be responsible for reviewing client's Issued For Construction (IFC) package contents and ensuring packages are complete and quality is sufficient to facilitate successful field execution of the project during the construction schedule.
As the Merrillville team grows, he or she will be responsible for the leading and/or performing design of deliverables associated with Substation Telecommunication drawing preparation and design, occasional site visits and station walkdowns, estimating, and attending scoping meetings. Must be able to complete assignments within budget and schedule with a high degree of accuracy. Must have a willingness to work overtime as required. Experience with Microsoft Office, and AutoCad software is a plus.
Additional SME responsibilities
- Define, document, formalize IFC package/deliverable quality criteria for use during design, stage gate reviews, and post-IFC “audits”.
- Suggest industry/other best practices to effectively and efficiently meet IFC package/deliverable quality criteria.
- Consult in development, revision, or improvement of design/engineering guides, standards, procedures, and/or processes.

- On-site field support or hands-on construction/technical services experience would be beneficial.

Physical location requirements
- Full time remote acceptable for prime candidates.
- Someone with a personal interest in relocating to NWI to be a part of Mesa’s NIPSCO design group in Merrillville would be of particular interest in the long term.
Other requirements
- Minimum of 6 years of electric utility or similar telecom experience in Wireless, Fiber, or Serial Communication System Design.
- Basic understanding of basic engineering/technical theories and principles
- Ability to complete moderate project level estimates
- Working knowledge of AutoCad
- Ability to work on multiple moderate level projects with proficiency
- Organizational and planning skills to plan workload and logically layout project schedules
- Understanding of tower wind loading, twist and sway, and strength of materials is a PLUS
- Good communication skills (oral and written) for interfacing with company personnel or outside customers
