Department Overview
The Research and Development Department is responsible for the development of technology platforms and products designed to support the future growth, competitiveness, and long-term sustainability of the company. As part of its platform development efforts, R&D conducts a wide range of research activities, namely in the areas of trait discovery and validation, crop genetic engineering, crop transformation, molecular detection, biochemical assays, plant growth, and molecular breeding, food science & innovation to name a few. These activities are aimed at developing new capabilities in crop research, the outcome of which is then leveraged to create new product development opportunities and shorten the time to market. The department leverages its platform capabilities and extensive knowhow in biology and crop science, along with the computational expertise housed within the Data Science & Platform Engineering, as well as the market insights of the Business Development and Commercial teams to design and create new and improved crop varieties, which offer tangible benefits to farmers and consumers, specifically in the areas of sustainability, health and nutrition.
Job Summary
We are actively seeking a Director, Food Science to join our rapidly growing Food & Innovation team within the Research and Development Department.
As Director, Food Science, you will be responsible for running the Analytical Science Lab with a focus on food functionality, flavor chemistry, composition and biochemistry. You will lead a diverse group of innovative scientists working to create valuable breakthrough plant-based food ingredients that are healthy, nutritious, affordable and tasty. This will involve massively innovating the product development cycle by creating a high-throughput (HTP) discovery platform that leverages breakthrough technologies such as: gene editing, novel genetic variability, AI/ML predictive engines, robotics, HTP analytical, biochemical and functional assays, along with state-of-art chemometric understanding. You will create clarity on the investment profile and the strategy for developing and applying relevant outcome-based assay pipelines, genetic-to-property profiles, operationalizing miniaturized breakthrough HTP solutions. You will also create outstanding connectivity with PMO, Commercial, & Business Development.
You Will:
- Lead strategy development and delivery for Food Analytical Science
- Be a people leader and manage development of a diverse group of scientists
- Identify high value and novel ingredient attributes needed in the marketplace
- Develop HTP assays and miniaturization models with attention to key resource constraints (quality, cost of prediction, data point scalability)
- Design and use pipeline capability metrics to improve success and remove bottlenecks
- Enable massive scaling and cost efficiencies for breakthrough analytics and assays
- Ability to see process waste (re-work, remediation) and create plans to reduce
- Manage the overall Food Analytical Science budget
- Expand our learning culture, centered on value-based thinking and scenario assessment
- Create inspiring team linkages
You Have:
Education
- Masters or PhD in Food Chemistry, Food Science, Food Engineering, Biochemistry, Nutrition strongly preferred.
Qualifications/Skills
- Ability to multi-task in a fast-moving environment
- Skills to manage multiple projects and initiatives while maintaining a strong sense of urgency
- Capability of coordination and teamwork across different functions and departments
- Strong written and verbal communication
Experience
- +10 years relevant agriculture, food, analytical, biochemistry, chemistry related R&D
- Proven experience developing and operationalizing analytical science strategies in a R&D organization
- Experience in food manufacturing research with special focus on novel ingredient functionality development
- Experience developing plant-based protein ingredients/food applications with enhanced functionality and flavor is a plus
- Experience with translating food analytics to food applications is a plus
- Experience with managing budgets and forecasting
- Experience in multiple settings in the development and application of food science technologies (ie analytical chemistry, genetic implications)
- Experience with developing and advancing a Food innovation to commercial
- A natural flair for engaging the hearts and minds across organizations for momentum
- Attention to detail coupled with an ability to paint the broader picture to accelerate decision making, learning and organizational engagement
- A self-starter who is driven, takes initiative, and enrolls others for maximal impact
