YWCA Central Maine is searching for a highly qualified individual to fill the full-time position of Lead Preschool Teacher. Lead teachers create engaging educational activities for young children that promote YWCA values, foster a love of learning, and acclimate children to the classroom setting. Each lead teacher is responsible for developing and implementing curriculum (Second Step), following the Maine Early Education Guidelines, swimming two times a week with their students, and following State of Maine Licensing expectations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Responsibilities:

  • Ensures that quality care is tailored and grouped according to age or ability and that programming meets the developmental needs of children in care.
  • Creates, develops, and facilitates programs and activities designed to enhance the learning of participants.
  • Ensures that children have the opportunity to participate in a variety of enriching activities each day.
  • Monitors the welfare of children involved in the program and reports on their development when necessary.
  • Ensures that child discipline issues are handled in a sound and respectful way and those problems are prevented or minimized through appropriate strategies and plans.
  • Maintains effective communication with parents about the activities of their child.
  • Participates in and supports the Aquatics and Food and Nutrition Program to ensure collaborative programmatic success.
  • Ability to meet the social-emotional, physical, and developmental needs of individual children

Qualifications:

The lead teacher shall be at least twenty-one (21) years of age and must meet (or work to meet) one of the following, per licensing standards (non-negotiable for lead teacher positions):

  • Degree in Early Childhood Education. A Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Arts (BA/BS) in Early Childhood Education; or
  • Degree and experience. An Associate in Arts/Associate in Science (AA/AS) in Early Childhood Education and three (3) years direct childcare experience; or
  • AA/AS and experience. AA/AS in a related field with eighteen (18) credit hours in Early Childhood Education and three (3) years direct childcare experience; or
  • BA/BS and experience. BA/BS in a related field with eighteen (18) credit hours in Early Childhood Education and three (3) years direct childcare experience; or
  • Credential and experience. Child Development Associate (CDA) as awarded by the CDA National Credentialing Program with five (5) years direct childcare experience; or
  • Experience and training. Seven (7) years experience and one hundred and eighty (180) hours of training in healthy, safe environments, child development; observation and assessment; developmentally appropriate practice; guidance; relationships with families; individual and cultural diversity or business and professional development; childcare, early childhood education, topics related to operating a Child Care Facility; or other subjects related to the age or characteristics of children for whom care is planned.
