Department Overview:
The Writing Support Specialist will provide essential, high-quality support to individuals and small groups of learners in all programs and on all campuses. They will work directly with instructors as well, offering support to a class as a whole or to individuals needing extra help in developing their academic writing skills. The Writing Support Specialist reports to the Education Manager in Student Academic Support Services. Function/Duties of Position:
The mission of Student Academic Support Services at OHSU is to provide comprehensive academic support services that inspire, challenge and empower learners to be lifelong learners, critical thinkers, and well-rounded scholars. Additionally, Student Academic Support Services aims to work with faculty to foster and cultivate a supportive learning environment for all learners. The Writing Support Specialist will develop and facilitate programs, services, and resources that support the development of academic skill areas (e.g. reading, writing, grammar, pronunciation, etc.).
The Writing Support Specialist will provide essential, high-quality support to individuals and small groups of learners in all programs and on all campuses. They will work directly with instructors as well, offering support to a class as a whole or to individuals needing extra help in developing their academic writing skills. The Writing Support Specialist reports to the Education Manager in Student Academic Support Services.
- One-on-one and group consultations with all students at OHSU: Present standardized American English and academic language clearly and serve as a linguistic model for students. Explain grammar or writing tools in an easy-to-understand way without overwhelming tutees. Respond to student writing both holistically and analytically. Interact in a friendly and patient manner with students from different cultural backgrounds, students of all levels of language proficiency, and students who may have learning differences.
- Design and contribute to online resources for writing and ESOL support for students across the university.
- Design and deliver peer review workshops for students and student writing. Present to faculty and students on various aspects of “best practices” for approaching the writing process, developing writing assignments, and providing or responding to feedback, or other writing topics as needed.
- Collaborate with stakeholders across the university to improve writing support for all students.
- Master’s degree in related field or equivalent experience; AND 1 year experience providing writing support or teaching scientific and doctoral-level writing courses, with an understanding of theories of writing pedagogy and tools of adult learning
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience; AND Strong presentation skills or public speaking experience - Experience in working with people from diverse cultures.
- Experience working in teaching academic writing or learning support centers.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Compliance with OHSU Code of conduct, respect in the workplace, applicable policies, procedures and agreements related to position, department or OHSU as a whole.
- A good understanding of thinking and learning processes and counseling/consulting skills to assess these processes and teach new strategies on an individual basis.
- Experience teaching a wide-variety of active learning strategies to help learners develop these skills, and the patience and empathy to discern the student’s skill level and to build on the student’s individual strengths.
- Knowledge and experience in consulting with faculty and collaborating with colleagues on academic support programs.
- Well-versed in the foundations of curriculum and instruction and ability to bridge theory and practice for diverse learners.
- A strong commitment to social and ecological justice in education.
- Knowledge of teaching and coaching multi-lingual learners and culturally diverse populations.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with a wide variety of groups and individuals.
- Comfortable in asynchronous and face-to-face student interactions.
- Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, student success, and working with a broad community.
- Commitment to serving a diverse population and advancing student success through highly engaged and high impact educational practices.
- PhD in Education, Applied Linguistics, English, Composition or Rhetoric, or doctorally prepared in related field.
- Graduate preparation in TESOL/ESL curriculum or related area.
- Experience teaching or tutoring adult ESL learners.
- Strong knowledge of or awareness of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) methodology.
