Cherry Hill Farmhouse/Arts and Humanities Coordinator
The City of Falls Church is recruiting for a full-time Cherry Hill Farmhouse/Arts and Humanities Coordinator position available immediately in the Recreation and Parks Department. The selected individual will coordinate community activities, cultural engagement and historic preservation of the Cherry Hill Farmhouse. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual passionate about local and American history, and educating the community through fun experiences and event programming.
The City is an independent city six miles from the nation's capital. It is small in area (2.2 square miles) and population (about 16,000 people). The City is known for its urban village community, quality customer service, nationally ranked school system, environmental activism, and endless community activities.
Responsibilities:
- Promote programs that will enlighten the public about mid-19th century life in rural Virginia.
- Plan and organize major special events such as Farm Day and regularly occurring smaller events such as readings, teas, concerts and workshops.
- Work closely with the Friends of Cherry Hill Foundation, the Victorian Society, and other civic groups on planning events, collections care and museum management.
- Plan and conduct thematic camps for school aged children during breaks and summer.
- Recruit and train volunteers. Maintain a volunteer schedule for Saturday tours of the Cherry Hill Farmhouse and Barn as well as for private tours.
- Design and implement educational programs for school groups and scout troops.
- Preserve the historical integrity and museum aspects of the house by ensuring any alterations are historically in keeping with the period of the house.
- Promote the use of the house for weddings and other special event rentals, meeting with rental clients and coordinating scheduling with other Recreation and Parks activities.
- Maintain professional contacts and attend quarterly meetings of the Virginia Association of Museums, the Historic House Museum Consortium of Washington, D.C. Metro Area and the Friends of Cherry Hill Foundation.
- Communication responsibilities include maintaining current information in relation to the position on the City’s website, Farmhouse social media accounts, the Friend’s website and external calendars.
- Supports other Recreation and Parks Department programing including special events occasionally on weekends, holidays and evenings, attends biweekly staff meetings and collaborates on departmental needs.
Other essential job functions include serving as an active member of the Arts and Humanities Council of Falls Church. This includes but is not limited to the following:
- Regularly attend Arts and Humanities Council meetings as well as sub-committee meetings.
- Reserve meeting rooms for all Arts and Humanities Council meetings.
- Lead City tasks in regard to the Arts and Humanities Council as required by the Council.
- As the City’s liaison to the Council, ensure all meeting notices, agenda and minutes are posted in accordance with FOIA policies.
- Coordinate with the Little City CATCH Foundation to implement annual grant program to include program and operational grants.
- Receives and updates current cultural and heritage program resources and interests within the community.
- May assist with marketing, fundraising and partnership programs, and coordinate with other City staff to ensure communications and marketing is effectively implemented.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university which has been accredited with major course of study in the history, art history or museum management field.
- Possess a strong combination of knowledge and experience of maintaining a historical property or collection, event planning and working with children.
- Possess skill in dealing with the general public, visitors, rental customers, and co-workers.
- Interest in community wide arts and culture.
- Experience working in a museum setting and experience working with governing boards and non-profits is a plus.
- Any Arts Administration in a private or public arts agency will be a plus.
Hours:
Tuesday through Saturday; 8:30am to 5pm. The position will also require additional hours for scheduled events and evening meetings as needed
Salary & Benefits:
The annual starting salary is $61,194, depending on qualifications and experience.
