This position is responsible for the managerial direction of the Transmission & Distribution (T&D) Global Practice within the Substation Department offices located in Minneapolis, Duluth, Sioux Falls and Bismarck. This position is responsible for the managerial direction of the Assistant Department Manager, Associate, Senior, and Staff (Level 11) engineers. This position will provide leadership and direction to grow the Department in a profitable manner based upon Burns & McDonnell's core values of client satisfaction, commitment, dedication, integrity, safety, and overall outstanding service.
Specific areas of responsibility include the following, with other duties assigned by senior management as needed:
Fostering Culture, Collaboration, Communication & Growth
Communicate within the Minneapolis Substation Department, and communicate with Substation leadership in all locations across the T&D global practice, regarding staffing, initiatives, and overall business line strategy.
Lead a dynamic Department that promotes ownership, engagement, and retainment of Department staff with a focus on creating an atmosphere/environment for all.
Drive a culture focused on safety and compliance with company and site safety policies.
Develop and foster an innovation culture that challenges the norm and utilizes tools, technology, and processes to drive continuous improvement and efficiency.
Facilitate profitable and sound growth of the Department by coordinating with T&D MSP Management and other Department Managers to achieve stated targets and standards for financial performance.
Coordinate work for the Department including making assignments and reviewing performance to ensure the efficient, cost-effective utilization of staff.
Interpret policies, procedures, and goals of the organization to the Department.
Prepare and monitor Department staff growth, billability, and expenditure of funds for staffing hours, supplies, training, and equipment.
Assist in the development and execution of the T&D MSP Strategic initiatives.
Support overall Office development and resource coordination between GPs.
Support Human Resources on educational partnerships and internship programs.
Support diversity and other office/GP initiatives.
Personnel
Work with the HR Recruiting Team Recruiting to proactively recruit the best candidates to meet Department and organization goals.
Responsible for the onboarding process for those transitioning into Substation. This includes but is not limited to interns, new graduates, experienced hires, transfers and converted contract employees.
Continuously educate the Department about the various career paths offered within T&D, and work with employee owners to help them develop the knowledge, skills, abilities, and opportunities to pursue their desired career path.
Serve as a mentor and coach to all the employee owners you directly manage.
Identify training needs and support training programs in collaboration with management.
Organize, lead, and conduct the annual performance appraisal process for Department staff.
Work with Human Resources and staff to identify, prepare, communicate, and monitor performance plans for employees with areas of needed improvement.
Technical/Execution/Production
Serve as the technical advisor, providing senior-level input and evaluation on Substation related items.
Assist Operations Manager in evaluating the overall financial health and performance of the department.
Work with the Project Managers, Operations Manager, GP Manager and other leadership to establish a pipeline of work to sustain and grow the department.
Monitor progress on Department related initiatives and provide input into areas of concern and direction/redirection to enhance achievement of quality, productivity, and budgets.
Advance and develop Department tools and workflows to increase Department efficiencies and quality. Proactively work through corrective actions where deficiencies are identified.
Responsible for QA/QC on Substation projects as needed to support Department staff
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited program.
Minimum 7 years related professional experience in T&D projects such as transmission and substation engineering design.
PE (Professional Engineer) license preferred.
Position requires the ability to influence, lead, and manage change thoughtfully and positively.
Candidates must possess strong design skills and a strategic perspective.
Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills; and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.
Must be able to articulate and comfortably speak in front of others.
Candidate must be able to collect and analyze financial and other information to make decisions.
Candidate must be able to organize and prioritize responsibilities.
Proficient in the use of basic computer software (ie. Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
Ability to handle difficult situations with tact, poise, and discernment.
