Job Title: Vertical Transportation Equipment (VTE) Technician/ Mechanic
Department: Base Operations & Maintenance
Job Summary:
The Vertical Transportation Equipment (VTE) Technician is responsible for the installation and repairs, fixes, and maintenance of elevators, escalators, moving walkways, and other lifts. They will generally perform preventive maintenance, such as oiling and greasing moving parts, replacing worn parts, and adjusting equipment for optimal performance. They also troubleshoot and may be called to perform emergency repairs.

Duties/Responsibilities:
Read and interpret blueprints to determine the layout of system components and to select the equipment needed for installation or repair
Troubleshoot malfunctions in brakes, motors, switches, and control systems
Test newly installation of VTE system to ensure that it meets specifications
Dismantle elevator or escalator units in order to gain access to remove and replace defective parts, using hoists, ladders, and hand/power tools
Keep service records of all maintenance and repair tasks
Investigates problems of electric, mechanical, and/or hydraulic nature related to the operation of elevators, dumbwaiters, and wheelchair lifts, determines their problems, and makes the necessary repairs
Conducts preventive maintenance and inspections of elevators, and related devices on a scheduled basis to ensure their effective and efficient operation and conformance to safety regulations, building codes, and OSHA requirements
Performs minor repair to equipment room electrical systems which include, checking, cleaning, and replacing contacts in elevator controller and selector relays; coils; fuses; motors; generator brushes; defective wiring; terminals; resistors, diodes, and other components on panels
Required Skills/Abilities:
Proficient written and oral communication skills according to skill requirements
Possess strong computer skills, able to read, write, and comprehend written instructional documents
Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume
Ability to apply concepts of introductory algebra and geometry
Proficient Microsoft Office productivity suite
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent
At least two years of related experience required
Understanding of the DoD MO-118 Inspection Of Vertical Transportation Equipment or agency equivalent
Knowledge of ASME, ICC, and ANSI requirements
Physical Requirements:
Prolonged period of standing, bending, reaching, and working with hands
Occasional periods of prolonged exposure to loud noises
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds at times
Ability to stand, walk, and reach with arms and hands as necessary
Ability to hear and see to position and safety requirement levels
Occasional exposure to elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, and chemicals
Special Qualifications/Requirements:
Must be able to successfully pass as required a federal, state, or local government's background investigation
Complete 4-year elevator apprenticeship through the National Elevator Industry Education program or National Elevator Association Certified Elevator Technician program
Certified Elevator Technician certificate
