Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Director of Youth & Family Engagement (YFE), the Education Librarian develops and provides effective outcomes-based library services for elementary and secondary schools, students, teachers, and homeschooling families. Seeks opportunities to work collaboratively with other YFE Librarians and with other Library departments to build relationships with schools, education focused organizations, and homeschools.

This is a full-time exempt position. Starting salary is $45,706 plus excellent benefits. Position open until filled. Hours of work will primarily be weekdays; some evening and weekend work may be required.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

• Develops and implements an outcomes-based plan for library services for schools, homeschooling families, students, teachers, and parents.
• Builds relationships and effective partnerships with public schools, charter schools, private, and parochial schools.
• Oversees student library account partnership program with schools.
• Attends school board meetings regularly. Participates in community led school district meetings as needed.
• Coordinates Library education services, including but not limited to educator cards, the “book a librarian” program, classroom collections, and an e-newsletter.
• Works collaboratively with other Library staff to ensure promotion of services online, in social media, and in printed pieces, as needed.
• Creates bibliographic and library skill instruction that is easily replicable by other library staff and adaptable for online usage.
• Works collaboratively with YFE librarians to create and maintain a database of schools and homeschooling organizations in our district and library services provided.
• Seeks ways to connect youth services staff with education resources.
• Participates in the planning and presenting of system wide youth and family programming.

• Experience working with students and teachers.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to work with populations that are diverse in age, gender, class, sexual orientation, ethnicity, etc.
• Demonstrated flexibility which includes a willingness to readily respond to changing circumstances and expectations.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively to develop and grow new library services.
• Working knowledge of children’s and teen literature and online resources. Demonstrated ability to promote usage of these materials and resources.
• Demonstrated desire to gain knowledge and stay current with trends and developments in education and library youth services.
• Basic understanding of Every Child Ready to Read and 21st Century Learning Skills.
• Demonstrate ability to organize work effectively, plan programs, and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
• The ability to speak and understand English is required. Additional consideration may be given to individuals that are fluent in any non-English languages spoken in the Kansas City area including Somali, Swahili, Spanish, Arabic, French, Dari, Pashto, and Vietnamese.
• Minimum requirements include: a degree or related experience in education or library science; significant experience working with children, teens, teachers, and parents; and understanding of child and adolescent development and a passion for excellent library services for and with youth. These requirements may also be met by an equivalent combination of education, relevant work experience, and life experience.
